Week 4 Question Time!

This week we are looking at different forms of communication in the modern era, particularly the technology used such as images, audio and video. Instead of posting a reflection this week in my general post, I would like to pose a few questions to you as reader.

Regarding images:
How do you think you should reference images on the internet? Were you ever corrected in school on image specific referencing?
I had set up a Flickr account once with images I had taken (with my tiny brand new camera) then digitally altered while in school. Since no one bothered looking at my art, I actually stopped using it and hid all those images in an album at home. Technology sharing can sometimes backfire when we are looking for attention! Teachers should be aware that when collaborating using technology, students will want recognition for individual efforts!

Regarding Audio:
Have you ever created music of your own that could be accessed via computer?
The podcast I listen to while driving is the RT Podcast by Roosterteeth, they actually release three a week however one hour of laughs is good enough for me!
I created a phone ring tone once for school, but liked it so much I wanted to continue making digital music. Then my computer crashed and I lost the program I had used initially, and could not afford to purchase it again. Teachers need to remember that backups are vital when creating via technology, I live by them now!

Regarding Digital Video:
Have you ever created a video or had one created for you?
I love creating videos, especially when they are about something I am passionate about or interested in. My favourite were a few ‘blast from the past’ videos I created for friends, where I grabbed music specific to that person and images mixed with videos from years ago. Mixing sound to match the mood of images, having it all blend well, is really fun. I would recommend teachers having a video creating assignment at least once each year, students can be as creative as they like and it really reinforces copyright skills.

  1. I think this is a great idea! It definitely makes collaborative work more interesting.
    Here are my answers:
Images: I don't know how to reference images, or when it should be done. I'm always so hesitant to use someone else's images (in fear of breaching copyright), so to combat this I will often create something from scratch. I use lots of diagrams because I can make those myself as well as patterns for backgrounds instead of pictures.
Audio: I have never created music, I have no musical talents whatsoever. I know there are a few places you can download music legally, however I have never needed to use music or audio files in my teaching (as of yet).
Video: Besides old family videos, I've never been in front or behind a camera. I would like to start making videos for my assessments instead of writing reflections, however i would need to play around with it a lot first.

  2. I've been using the referencing method that is on the moodle site where if a image is used its URL is noted with Source. For example
    Source: http://teachonline.asu.edu/2012/10/aligning-assessments-with-learning-objectives/
Basically if I didn't create the image I reference it just to be safe, I'll be looking up the referenceing website a lot I imagine, because I think its so important that if we integrate digital tools into the classroom that we model and teacher correct referencing to our students.

Ha ha I have created many music files mostly of me playing scales when I did a music degree, one of the most scarring experiences of my life was hearing my Viola playing on tape for the first time, the recording never lies! The great thing these days is that a basic smart phone has a decent record function on it, for all those aspiring musicians among your students.

Video's: The only videos I've done was that flipgrid exercise in week 1! It struck me that recording yourself teach would be a great tool to inform how you could improve. If possible I'm going to record all of my next prac so I can isolate annoying habits etc that I have that detract from my teaching. I also think that recording yourself teach could add an added level of accountability which might make me stop and think before I do and say things.
